Project Goal
I was tasked to work with Business Bricks to turn Maddox's Substation Transformers into a LEGO set, which included my box and manual design.
Design Initiative
My role in this task was to ensure the Business Bricks designers accurately replicated our substation transformer. Taking renders that I received from Business Bricks and the box/manual templates they sent, I was able to create the box with a manual that both advertises the product well, and incorporates marketing language to encourage those that receive this gift to buy the real transformer!
Because these LEGO sets are primarily sent off to trade shows and specific customers, showcasing the Maddox brand is crucial.
Substation LEGO Set Design Process
Since the actual product itself is needed before the other assets can accurately represent it, finalizing these renders would be the first step in the process before piecing together the box and manual.
Final Substation LEGO Renders from Business Bricks:
Substation LEGO Box Cover
The cover of a LEGO Box is the most exciting piece. I remember as a kid wanting to buy various LEGO sets because of how cool it looks pieced together on the box and in action! Considering this, the goal was to showcase this transformer in action—on a concrete pad, at a substation yard, with the bushings connected. So, I used some Photoshop skills to make this happen bu created the "scene" in which this LEGO set could be used in an imaginative sense. Here is how that turned out:
Substation LEGO Box
Using the renders given and the front scene I created, I was able to create a box design that would showcase what was inside the box in its final, pieced-together form while also pointing to the Maddox brand.

Substation LEGO Manual
Following this box design, I was also tasked to create a manual. This would include the front cover and back cover while the rest of the content was filled by Business Bricks with instructions on how to actual build the LEGO set.
For the front cover, my goal was to mimic the front of the LEGO box for consistency. For the back cover, my goal was to advertise Maddox! I did this by using compelling marketing language and a QR code, taking you to the Substation landing page on the Maddox site.
